A child born outside of the marriage between the father and mother will be considered the legitimate child of the mother only. Registering the child’s legitimation allows the father to become the legal guardian

Under Thai law, if a child is born outside of marriage, only the mother is the legal guardian. By registering the legitimation of the child, the father will become the legal guardian according to the law. However, to register the legitimation, the child is typically required to be over 7 years old, or younger if the child can read and write properly, at the discretion of the officer.
